Dr. Garboczi joined the Inorganic Building Materials Group of the Building
Materials Division in October 1988. He was leader of the Group for 10 years, from
1999-2009, and then became a NIST Fellow. Dr. Garboczi is working on the
relationships between microstructure and properties in cement-
based and other random materials using realistic computer-based microstructural models and
exact transport algorithms. AC and DC electrical, diffusion,
fluid permeability, and linear elastic properties have been
investigated and successfully compared to experiment. Percolation and composite theory are
used to understand
the microstructure-dependent properties of random materials.
Dr. Garboczi also is pursuing research into mathematically characterizing particle
shape, using spherical harmonic series acting on images measured using
X-ray computed tomography. Particles that have been studied include sand, gravel,
cement, limestone, shredded rubber tires, stainless steel and cobalt chrome for
additive manufacturing, and lunar soil simulants. Finally, Dr. Garboczi
has a growing research program using X-ray computed tomography to study microstructure.
Prior to his coming to NIST, Dr. Garboczi was a research physicist at the
Armstrong World Industries, Inc. Research and Development Division.
Dr. Garboczi is a member of the American Physical Society, the American
Ceramic Society, RILEM, and the American Concrete
Institute. He received
the Robert L'Hermite Medal from RILEM
(International Union of Testing and Research Laboratories for Materials and
Structures) (1992), the Silver Medal from the Department of Commerce (2009),
the American Ceramic Society Edward C. Henry award (2009), the American Ceramic
Society Della Roy Lecture award (2012), and is a Fellow of the American
Concrete Institute and the American Ceramic Society.
