In optimizing the performance of concrete, the interfacial zones between aggregate and cement paste are a key concern. Understanding the characteristics of these interfacial regions as a function of material properties is thus crucial. This paper describes the use of a fundamental computer-based modelling approach [16] to understanding interfacial zone properties for concretes containing various mineral admixtures. The modelling not only provides support for previous experimental observations, but also provides new insights into the effects of mineral admixtures on interfacial zone characteristics. Through this study, the power of using fundamental computer-based models to quantitatively understand the development of microstructure and its effect on performance is demonstrated.
