Summary
A methodology for proportioning ordinary portland cement concrete mixtures to
incorporate internal curing has been presented. Based on a simple equation, the two major factors to consider are the
specific chemical shrinkage of the cement at the expected curing temperature
and the relative availability of internal water in the LWA at reduced (
≈95 %) relative humidities.
The methodology provides a starting point for
designing concretes with internal curing. Further research will be required to optimize the water distribution
within the concrete microstructure and effectively handle blended cement
concretes.
