Mr. Bentz received his Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering in May 1984 from the University of Maryland, College Park, Maryland. Having worked in the Building Materials Division full-time during the summer of 1983 and part-time during the subsequent school year, he permanently joined the Division upon graduation. Mr. Bentz received his Master of Science degree in Computer and Information Science from Hood College, Frederick, MD, in May of 1991.
Initially, his research activities were focused on the development of computer image processing software and hardware to quantify the properties and degradation states of building materials. In 1987, he, along with three colleagues (Jonathan Martin, Mary McKnight, and Edward Embree), received an IR-100 award from Research and Development magazine for the development of the "Infrared Emission Surface Profilometer." Also in 1987, he and Dr. Martin received the Editor's Award of Excellence from the Journal of Protective Coatings and Linings for their article "Using the Computer to Analyze Coating Defects." More recently, his research has focused on the application of computer modelling to relate microstructure to material properties for random porous media such as cement-based materials and fire resistive materials. The ultimate goal of this research is to predict the performance of these systems based on the properties of the starting materials and the exposure environment.
Mr. Bentz spent seventeen months in industry (from 7/87 to 12/88) at the corporate research facility of W.R. Grace & Co., where he was the recipient of one patent, before returning to NIST. At W.R. Grace, his research and development efforts were directed towards waterproofing and fireproofing materials and admixtures for concrete. In 1993/94, he spent six months as a guest researcher at the Centre Scientifique et Technique du Batiment in Grenoble, France. In 1997, he took a one-year leave of absence from his research position to volunteer at Nuestros Pequenos Hermanos, an orphanage in Mexico.

He is a former chairperson of the Cements Division of the American Ceramic Society, a member of the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), a member of the American Concrete Institute (ACI), a senior member of RILEM, and a member of Who's Who in Science and Engineering. He is associate editor of the journal Cement and Concrete Composites. He is a recipient of the 1997 Brunaeur Best Paper Award from the Cements Division of the American Ceramic Society, the 1998 Robert L'Hermite Medal from RILEM, and a 1998 Bronze Medal Award from the U.S. Department of Commerce. In 1998, he was named a Maryland Distinguished Young Engineer. In both 1999 and 2000, he was a Knud Hojgaard Foundation visiting professor on concrete technology in the Building Materials Laboratory at the Technical University of Denmark. Beginning in the summer of 2002, Mr. Bentz took an eighteen-month leave of absence from NIST to volunteer with his family at a small orphanage (Hogar de la Esperanza) in Santa Cruz, BOLIVIA. In 2007, he was awarded the ACI Wason Medal for Materials Research and the Expanded Shale, Clay, and Slate Institute (ECSCI) Frank G. Erskine award, both for his ongoing research on internal curing. In 2008, he was selected as keynote lecturer for the annual meeting of the Japanese Cement Association, presenting a talk entitled Modeling of Concrete Performance Based on Cement Chemistry: Efforts at NIST.
In 2009, he was awarded a U.S. Department of Commerce Silver Medal Award (along with Jeffrey Bullard, Edward Garboczi, William George, Nicos Martys, and Judith Terrill) for research on developing capabilities to predict the performance of concrete. That same year, he and Kenneth Snyder were awarded a U.S. Department of Commerce Bronze Medal award for their research on developing a new class of concrete admixtures to slow diffusion in cement-based materials based on nanoscale viscosity modifiers.
